This guy looks like he’s been around for a while. Since 1943, I’m thinking, given its classy, modern label design.

This is another one of those beverages that extols the virtues of being “salt free”. Whatever. In my experience, “salt free” implies “tastes like poo”.

Pathmark #452 (908-964-8610) Kerry pointed out that this particular specimen travels in packs of four, rather than the usual six.

She picked this one up on a trip to New York City with her fiancee Scott to see a Bjork concert.

See! I have cool friends!

I went to visit Scott where he was stationed, in Newport, Rhode Island. (I like to make fun of Scott about how cold it is up there–there have been many times that it’s been colder there than in Barrow, Alaska!)

Anyway, after seeing lovely Newport, we went to Boston for a couple of days. We stayed in a hotel near MIT (actually in Cambridge), and this grocery store was in the same building. As was a parking garage.

Did I mention that we had to pay $10/day for the privilege of using the parking garage attached to the hotel?

Big cities. Bah.

Commentary:

I got this one on my birthday!

I met my parents for dinner at the Cracker Barrel in Wilson, NC, and my brother told me that he had spotted a new species in Harris Teeter. Apparently, this new species was better adapted to the harsh nature of that particular grocery store, and so drove the previously dominant species (Dr. Smooth) into extinction.

If you’re an NC State supporter, you have to take whatever victories you’re given, no matter how small, and hold them very tightly and cherish them for a long time. This is a lesson you learn after seasons filled with disappointment.

For this reason, and because of our involvement with the Pep Band, most of us have become fairly strong supporters of the women’s basketball program at NC State, which is actually quite good. It’s coached by Kay Yow, who coached the US Olympic Women’s Basketball team to the gold medal in 1984 (I think that’s the year).

So, when our team was made the Sweet Sixteen, a couple of us decided to drive up to Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh to see them play Connecticut. In 1998, NC State defeated Old Dominion in the Sweet Sixteen and Connecticut in the Elite Eight to make it’s first and only Final Four berth. Sadly, no such event was destined to happen again, and the Huskies defeated the Wolfpack 72-58.

We took a side trip to Cleveland for a day.

Cleveland was interesting. You should read more about that trip in the writeup for Dr. Pop.

I took a trip with a small group to Pittsburgh to watch the NC State Women’s basketball team play in the Sweet Sixteen of the 2001 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. We took a side trip to Cleveland, and drove through Akron on the way back home.

Since it was March, it was long past the time we’d see any snow in North Carolina, and we were excited at the prospect of seeing it in Cleveland. Sure enough, as we were arriving, we saw a few flakes, and we were giddy with excitement.

We dropped our stuff off at a Hampton Inn downtown, and proceeded to walk around town (after dressing ourselves in much heavier clothing).

The snow that started as a novelty turned into a blizzard. We walked down to the waterfront to see Lake Erie, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Cleveland Browns Stadium, and couldn’t see the city anymore when we got out there. It was just flat-out freezing there!

I didn’t actually worry about it (you know, Yankees get snow all the time, so they can deal with it, right?) until they started closing Interstates and the waitress at a restaurant we were at started freaking out.

Fortunately, when we got up the next morning, the streets were perfectly clear, and we were able to start our drive home unimpeded.

Our trip took us through Akron, where we stopped and found a discount warehouse-style supermarket that was offering this particular specimen.

There’s more information about this trip in the writeup for Mr. aahh, which we collected in Cleveland.

Doctor Soda

Store: Pak-a-Sak
Location: Swansboro, NC
Packaging: can
Commentary:

I picked up this can on the way back from a trip to T&W Oyster Bar with my parents.

The restaurant, located on Highway 58, was quite a treat. At the bar, you order steamed oysters by the peck, and the wait staff shells them for you, dropping the empties onto a small conveyor belt that runs out the back of the restaurant.

But, I digress.

I noticed the Pak-a-Sak on the way to the restaurant, and made everyone stop on the way back just to see if they had a specimen I hadn’t seen before. This one has “Doctor” in big letters, and so appears to have given up its surname entirely. However, a small subtitle says “Doctor Soda” which I assume is the beverage’s full, legal name.
